After buying your bow make sure you keep those measurements handy because you'll need some arrows too. Broadheads come in either fixed-blade or mechanical setups, and most hunters choose a weight of 100 grains, though heavier broadheads are coming back into style.

To aim accurately, you'll need a bow sight and plenty of time at the range. At the range, you'll need to spend time adjusting your sight for arrow placement accuracy. Don't worry; it's easier than it sounds! You'll simply need to make sure that your arrows are on target and straight, not listing to one direction or the other. If you are listing one direction, check your site and arrow rest alignment. The Arrow rest is another essential that supports your arrow while you draw and release. There are different types, so find one that fits your shooting style. I'm probably in the minority, but I prefer a simple "Whisker Biscuit".

Now, let's talk about accessories. You'll need a quiver to hold your arrows securely and keep them within easy reach during your hunt. Most compound bows are equipped with the ability to quickly attach a quiver to the bow, which I find incredibly convenient. To stabilize your bow and reduce vibration, get a bow stabilizer. I recommend you practice with and without the stabilizer to get a feel for your bow and your preferences. Finally, don't forget a release. These little gadgets help you release the arrow smoothly and consistently and make a big difference in your shooting accuracy. There are many types of releases, and the type you need will vary depending on your bow. For compound bows, I prefer the hook release so that I don't have to look at my string while attaching my release. For my trad, I prefer no release so that I'm not messing with awkward leather-fingered archers gloves.

Archery hunting is about spotting your query before it spots you. To spot game from a distance, a good pair of binoculars or even a spotting scope is essential. Trust me; it makes a world of difference out there. You'll also want to pick up a rangefinder; they're a game-changer! It'll tell you exactly how far your target is, so you can adjust your aim or select your pins accordingly. Next up, camo clothing will help you blend in with your surroundings. I primarily use Sitka gear that I purchased deeply discounted form Camofire.com, but I also like First Lite and Kuiu products. And speaking of camouflage, some hunters love Scent control products to prevent animals from detecting their presence. You might consider using scent-control products like sprays, detergents, and scent-controlled clothing storage if you're worried about it. I personally find that wind direction and set up to the wind are more helpful than anything else.

Most importantly, safety first! Yes, a first aid kit is always a good idea, but it's just a start. You'll also need a good mapping system, good boots, and specialty equipment. In my mind, there is only one mapping system for knowing where you are in the backcountry, and that's ON-X Maps - safety starts with knowing where you are. Next up, make sure you have good boots to tackle the terrain you plan to encounter. Depending on the terrain, I move between a very stiff-soled boot for high mountain hunts and trail running shoes. These are important, so know your needs - the right boot once saved me from a broken leg two miles in with a mule deer on my back and no cell signal. Finally, an example of plan-dependent safety gear is hunting from a tree stand. In this scenario, a safety harness is a must to prevent broken bones or worse!
